João Luis Nabo
Born in Montemor-o-Novo in 1960, João Luís Nabo pledged himself, from an incipient age, to choral and instrumental music. His career choice, however, was distinctly diverse from music, which he furthered by taking a degree in Modern Literatures and Languages at Lisbon Classical University, as well as obtaining the position of resident teacher in Montemor-o-Novo High School.
Attended Évora Music Academy, studied piano with private teachers, among which Isabel Joaquina da Cruz, founded and directed the Choir of Literature Faculty, where he pursued and concluded his studies.
He was the organist and director of the Liturgic Choir of the Matriz Church in Montemor-o-Novo, from 1979 to 1990, a piano teacher of Sociedade Carlista Music School, in 1990 and 1991, and the editor of the regional newspaper “Folha de Montemor”, from October 1989 to April 2003.
Performed as a tenor of the Lisbon University Choir; attended the II and III Sines International Summer Courses, in 1990 and 1991, in which he studied chant and vocal technique with Elisete Bayan and Vianey da Cruz as well as choral directing with Anton de Beer and Edgar Saramago.
Also attended, in 2000 and 2001, the 1st and 2nd Vocal Technique Courses of Montemor-o-Novo, oriented by Prof. Maria João Serrão and the 5th Workshop of Gregorian Chant, in March 2003, directed by Prof. Idalete Giga.
Penned several holy pieces that are regularly interpreted by S. Domingos Choir, one of which was recorded in the ensemble’s second discographic offering.
Founded S. Domingos Choir in January 1987 and is still its conductor.
